Datta Angha Vrat – 12 December 2026
Datta Angha Vrat is a significant Pooja observed in honor of Lord Dattatreya and his wife Angha Devi, dedicated to purification and spiritual growth. According to Hindu mythology, Swami Dattatreya, known as Angha Swamy, himself imparted the significance of Angha Vrat to his dear disciple Kartyaviryarjuna in the Kruta Yuga.
As mentioned in Datta Puran, this Vrat is performed on Margashirsha Krishna Paksha Ashtami, along with their eight sons (Ashta Maha Siddhi). Kartyaviryarjuna, the Haihaya king, through his devotion to Dattatreya and righteous living, created a golden era by imparting Angha Vrat. His reign is often referred to as a period of great prosperity and peace.
The Vrat is a great example of how ancient Indian mythology highlights the importance of the devotion of a disciple towards his Guru. Later, in Tretayug, Dasarath Maharaj and Lord Srirama also performed Angha Vrat. Similarly, in Dwaparyug, Lord Krishna performed Angha Vrat.
The word “Angha” means sin or impurity. It is fascinating how our thoughts, words, and actions can create obstacles in our journey. The concept of Angha Swamy and Angha Devi as a divine couple highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness and purification. By worshipping them, devotees can work towards cleansing themselves of past mistakes and starting a new journey towards personal development and fulfillment of objectives.
Angha Swamy and Angha Devi are revered as a divine couple who can help remove sins and impurities. In Kaliyug, it is believed that sins and impurities can weigh heavily on our spiritual journey. Performing the Angha Vrat with the guidance of a knowledgeable priest can be a powerful way to seek forgiveness, purification, and spiritual growth. If you are interested in observing this Vrat, finding a genuine and experienced priest can help shield you from negative energies.
