Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste and gave him life to guard her privacy while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned and was denied entry by the child, a fierce battle ensued. Unaware of Ganeshaโ€™s identity, Shiva severed his head in anger.

Seeing Parvatiโ€™s grief, Shiva restored the boy to life by placing the head of a young elephant upon his body, blessing him as the leader of the ganas and the remover of obstacles.
